Back in April, the death of African American athlete Tori Bowie from complications of childbirth sent shockwaves across the United States. The world’s leading economic power also has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. These numbers are twice as high for Black women in the poorer, mostly conservative states of the south. So what explains these shocking figures?
